Workshop 04 – Care for Real – Staff Leadership 02-07-2024

WKA met with Kate, Gregory, Shana and Jen to discuss administrative spaces and in-depth requirements for refrigeration, parking lot and other support spaces.

Gregory – Executive Director – 5 direct reports (3 outsourced) – in-office direct reports are Director of Programs – Kate and Director of Communications and Development – Jen; Private office (Level 2) with a table seating 4-5

Kate – Director of Programs – 4 direct reports -Sr Manager, Warehouse & Distribution – Shana; Programs Associate – Caroline; P-T Program Associate – Rachel; Programs & Partnerships Manager – Jari * shared with Jen; Private office (Level 1 preferred) with a table seating 2?
Programs: Food (Edgewater site, Rogers Park and home delivery – 60 per week with a waitlist, limitations are staff and space), pet food, clothing (Edgewater only), volunteer program – student and corporate groups (volunteer yearly hours = 22 full time staff hours); interns (up to 4 interns at a time)

Private office (Level 1) with table seating 2-3
Warehouse (receiving food); distribution (clients, volunteers, interns); management of CfR drivers and van fleet (3 vans currently with future growth to 4 vans); GCFD orders.

Level 1: P. Office (client intake); Waiting Room seating 10-12 (number in-flux) (reception desk not built-in); P.Office for client de-escalation
– Multipurpose room – client education space; staff meetings; volunteer orientations?; space for outside organization use. Separate space with no connection to admin space on Level 2?
-Food distribution area with a flexible layout (WKA will provide 2-3 options for locating reach-in units); provide a closet (not a room) for pet food

  • -Flexibility to locate reach in refrigerators anywhere on Level 1; walk-in cooler/freezers with x2.5 -3 times the current capacity. Shana envisions using walk-ins for the majority of storage and packaged distribution goods.
  • – Tool storage (keyed access) located near Sr Manager, Warehouse/Distribution – Shana
  • -Concerned about truck/van access to the parking lot from the alley especially during distribution and food rescue deliveries.
  • -Provide access to the trash enclosure from the lot and the alley. Discussion about future on-site composting. CfR will provide trash/recycling requirements.
    Level 2: Staff lounge with lockers for 15-20; volunteer lounge – 30-35 lockers (check-in, lockers and break area; volunteer orientation?); kitchenette shared with volunteer and staff lounge – separate from distribution.
    Provide a total of eight (8) workstations (open office) for staff and interns

Huddle Rooms (2); IT closet;

Care for Real trucks: 2016 Ford Transit High Roof Van; 2019 Dodge Ram Promaster 2500; 2016 Ford Transit Connect.
The GCFD trucks: Box trucks:  either Freightliner M2100’s or International MV607’s (26ft long and 12ft 6in in height) with lift gate.
